Paris’s Musée du Louvre is the most famous museum in the world and, as a consequence, it is also the most visited one. Even it receives so many visitors, we rarely feel that it is overcrowded because the place is really huge. It houses masterpieces from prehistory to contemporary works. Among these works of art, there are some of the most well known paintings and sculptures of the world. As the exhibition space is really enormous, it can be overwhelming to visit the museum if you don’t know what to look out for. So, I’ve done a selection of the five most important things that must be seen at Louvre Museum in my opinion.

1.  Mona Lisa

This is Louvre’s main attraction and it is definitely not a surprise that it is in first place in my ranking. Leonardo da Vinci painted Mona Lisa between 1503 and 1505, and the masterpiece is also known as La Gioconda. Many visitors come to Louvre only to see the enigmatic smile of the woman portrayed in the painting.

2. Venus de Milo

While Mona Lisa is the most famous painting of the world, Venus de Milo de Milo is probably the most famous sculpture. It was created between 130 and 100 B.C. and it was discovered on the island of Milos in Greece only in 1820. Visiting the Hellenistic sculpture of the goddess of love is also a great opportunity to see other amazing masterpieces in the department of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities.

3. Victory of Samothrace

The sculpture of the Winged Victory of Samothrace was created between 220 and 190 B.C., and it shows Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory preparing to fly. The masterpiece is placed at the centre of a staircase in the Louvre’s Denon wing.

4. Napoleon apartments

Napoleon III’s reign from 1852 to 1870 goes down in history for considerably changing the face of Paris. The French capital was thoroughly modernized and transformed during this period. In Louvre Museum, Napoleon III Apartments definitely impressed me by their stunning decoration. They are an exceptional record of decorative art of that time.

5. Mummy

The mummy in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities is another thing that absolutely must be seen in a visit to the Louvre. This mummy is extremely well preserved, and it is quite interesting to see it. Besides, there are many other Ancient Egyptian treasures at this department of the museum.
