Warsaw Old Town

Old Town was definitely my favorite place in Warsaw during my stay in the city. The area is quite charming and it’s really nice to spend some time there, especially in the summer when the main square become a stage for musical and theatrical performances. Full of tourists and locals walking around, the area has many art galleries, shops, cafés and restaurants. The heart of the area is the Old Town Market Square established in the 13th century but it was almost totally destroyed during the Second World War. We may see some paintings along the area that were vital during Warsaw post-war reconstruction.
The square was the most important place in the city until the end of the 18th century with regular fairs and many festivities being held there. Once the capital was moved from Krakow to Warsaw in the 16th century, the castle on the Old Town became seat of the king and government. During my stay in the city, I used to spend at least one hour there per day just exploring around. The place is really full of life and there are lots of things that deserve to be seen there. The Royal Castle and the Historical Museum of Warsaw must clearly be visited as well as the Cathedral Basilica of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist.
