Museo del Prado is the most important museum in Spain. It used to be a natural history museum in the past, but it was converted in a repository of Spanish art in 1819. The main purpose of turning it into a art museum was to displaying works of art belonging to the Spanish Crown to demonstrate that Spain had a collection of paintings and sculptures of equal merit to any other country in Europe. Along time, it acquired other pieces of art. Nowadays, it has mainly paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings from the 12th century to the early 19th century. In addition to the Spanish pieces of art, it started to host works from other European countries. The 17th- and 18th-century Spanish paintings, however, are still the most popular attractions in the museum. These collections have works from great spanish painters like Velázquez, Goya and Ribera. The most famous canvas in Museo del Prado is Las Meninas, from Velásquez. The oldest copy of Mona Lisa is also in museum and draws much attention from visitors. Many tourists consider Museo del Prado the main reason to visit Madrid. So, don’t lose the opportunity to go there if you are in the city. The museum is open every day. From Monday to Saturday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.. On Sundays and holidays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ticket price is € 14 for adults and the reduced rate for people over 65 years old is € 7. The museum is free for anyone under 18 and students under 25.
